Holy Hip Hop!

I rhyme, but I don’t rap. Call it a cultural thing, a matter of taste, or whatever – you decide. But even though there are a few exceptions, I just don’t like rap “music.”

lecraeNow, I have heard a lot about Lecrea, but do I have to enjoy his art? No. My daughters like his stuff, but I can’t stand it. Sorry. A lot of people love Steve Martin’s comedy, but not everyone loves his banjo picking (which is incredible).

Nevertheless, it’s not as much about the style as it is the message and intent of the artist. The following video from RZIM (Ravi Zacharias International Ministries) does a great job with this subject. A question about rap music in church is asked by someone during a Q&A at James Madison University. It’s worth watching.

Just Being a Fan

Not a Follower

Not too long ago Kyle Idleman wrote a book entitled Not a Fan. As a matter of fact, I led one of our adult Sunday School classes through a chapter-by-chapter study of the book. The idea is that we are not called to be simply “fans” of Jesus, but followers.

Let me set things straight – I am a fan of Building 429, not a follower. I simply adore these guys as a band, but I don’t put them on a pedestal, memorize their birth dates and favorite colors, or have posters of them on my wall. All I’m saying is that when I say “I love these guys,” I am not equating that “love” with the “love” I have for the Lord.

I am just a FAN of Building 429.

I’m a Fan

The word “fan” comes from the word “fanatic,” and some people’s obsessions with music groups are expressed in fanatical behavior. I would consider myself a fan, but not a fanatic.

However, I have to say that every time I have seen these guys perform it has been a blessing. That is why last night I stood in the rain at an outdoor Christian music festival (JFest 2014) in order to hear (and watch) them sing. Some may describe my behavior as “fanatical,” but I knew the show was worth it.

I first became acquainted with the guys from Building 429 when they stopped by the Cracker Barrel in our neighborhood. They were on the road to a recording session when they stopped their tour bus for some Southern cooking, only to be on the receiving end of my legalistic, self-righteous judgmentalism. That lead to a conversation which you can read about HERE.

New and Favorite

If you are sadly unfamiliar with Building 429, let me share with you a couple of videos.

The first one is of their latest release entitled “Press On.” Well, it’s called “Press On,” but the actual title is too similar to another song sung by a former Disney star while swinging nude through the air (“Wrecking Ball”).

The idea of this song is that no matter what the world throws at us, we should just “press on.”

The next video is from a couple of years ago, but it has to be one of my favorite songs. The words of the chorus are ones I often repeat: “All I know is I’m not home yet. This is not where I belong. Take this world and give me Jesus. This is not where I belong.

Oh, hallelujah! I’m not home, yet!

Mother’s Day Song

Happy Mother’s Day

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day. However, I don’t know many songs, if any, written specifically for this holiday.

My Mother, Grandmother, and Me

My Mother, Grandmother, and Me

I have a wonderful mother. My wife is a wonderful mother, too. Therefore, I find it unfortunate that there are no songs we can sing in the same way we gather around as a family and sing Christmas carols.

So, a couple of years ago, because of the shortage of Mother’s Day carols, I wrote one. Learn it, love, and share it!

With your help, generations to come will gather around that last slice of pie, that tinseled load of laundry, or whatever item chosen to symbolize motherhood, and sing a song for mothers everywhere.

The Mother’s Day Song

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. – Exodus 20:12

A “New Age”

It Was the 90’s

It’s the dream of many young people to have a garage band. A few of them actually put a band together that can crank, get in gear, and drive out of the garage.

rockersBack in the late 80’s and early 90’s my sister and I had a band called “Mirror Image.” We came on to the scene at a time when musical styles were in the process of changing and popular Christian music was still trying to find itself. Stylistically, we were either too early, too late.

Nevertheless, our final incarnation, consisting of my sister, Rebecca (keyboard & vocals), Steve Castlen (drums), Jody Gould (guitar), and myself (bass), was a locally popular band that, at least, made a small impact on eternity. Our music was original (either written by Rebecca, myself, or the group), fun, and intended to reach a younger generation with the gospel of Christ. As a result, more than a few young people came to know Jesus as their Savior.

A Different Century

mirror image bandIt’s now 2014, Mirror Image is no more, and all of the band members have gone on to other things. Rebecca is now Rebecca Gomes and lives in Germany; Jody Gould owns Battlefield Recording Studio and runs sound for the influential Brainerd Baptist Church; Steve Castlen is a certified apologist in Nashville; and I am here, preaching and remembering our youth.

But even though it’s been over 20 years since Mirror Image was rock’n the stage, those of us here in the States (sorry, Rebecca), have teamed up again. This time we are working on Katie’s (my daughter) first single.

Despite our age…despite my lack of hair…despite the fact that Steve (Captain America) is more “built” now than then – which is irritating…the creative forces which drove our talents in the early years have only gotten better. Maturity has it’s benefits.

An Old Song

You are going to be unbelievably impressed with Katie’s song, “It’s Beautiful.” Our intent is to have it receive national attention and airplay, who knows? But in the meantime, I have something unique and special for you to listen to. Click on the link below and listen to a song Mirror Image recorded – believe it or not – on a cassette recorder in a brick-walled Sunday school classroom.

The song (which I wrote) is called “New Age.” It talks about how many religions and cults point toward a coming day when the world will enter a “new age” of peace, understanding, and oneness. The only problem? All those who dogmatically worship one God must be “taken out” of the world, one way or another. The New Age, the Paradigm Shift, none of it can come as long as Christians are still in the world. Ironically, Christians believe the same thing.

I’ve Got a Mighty, Mighty Friend

Tough Times

A few minutes ago I was reading a post from a friend. He expressed several needs, yet praised the Lord for being in control (Romans 8:28). Aren’t you glad we serve a Mighty God?

All of us are living in tough and troubling times. For some of you, the road you’re on has far more bumps and potholes than the roads of others. Yet, all of us will agree, wherever we are, that the world is not getting any better. Times are tough, and are only going to get tougher.

But…

But, I have a Mighty Friend who is not affected by the whims of men or the winds of time. As a matter of fact, my Friend is the One who created man and started time.

Several years ago (2007) I wrote a song for my little girls to sing. Not long ago, while preparing for a banquet in our church gym, I listened to a recording of the song …and shouted…literally, I kicked up my heels, pumped my fists, waved my hands, and shouted “Praise GOD!

Maybe you need some encouragement? Just read the lyrics I have included below, and if God is your friend, don’t worry (Matthew 6:30-34).

Mighty Friend

Well I may not be as tall as a building or strong as a big ol train
I may not be as smart as a scientist doing things I can’t explain
But I know the One who made the tallest mountain and can whip up a hurricane
And the very One who invented gravity says He even knows my name.

Well I may not know what’s comin’ in the mornin’, or what the day may bring
Good or bad, I’m not gonna worry, ‘cause Jesus knows everything.
So I’ll do the best with what God has given me as long as there is time
‘Cause the One that got the clocks a-tick’n told me it’ll all be fine.

When the devil acts like a bully, putting on a scary show
Before you run away and hide in a corner there’s something you need to know
The One who spoke the world into existence is standing by your side
And if you look close the devil’s knees are shakin’ cause he knows he’ll lose the fight

Chorus:
Cause I’ve got a Mighty, Mighty Friend who watches over me
And He’s the Mighty, Mighty Savior who died to set me free
Well I may not be the greatest at anything, but this one thing is so
The God that is the greatest at everything loves me, this I know.

Katie is going to hate me for doing this…

…but I am going to include the recording I was talking about. This was recorded back when she (Katie) was only 10 or 11 years-old. It’s not Nashville quality, but it’s precious. So, as so many people say before they sing in church, “Don’t listen to how we sing, just listen to the words.”

Starting from Scratch

It’s Been a While

You know, it’s been a while since I first let you know Katie (my middle daughter) was working on her first recording project. As a matter of fact, it’s been over a year.

Well, things didn’t exactly work out the way we planned the first time around, so we are starting over. This time we are taking it one song at a time, slowly, making each song the best it can be (on a limited budget). Hopefully, because we are now working with a friend of mine who’s studio is nearby, there will be radio-worthy stuff heading your way real soon.

The Engineer/Producer

Jody Gould has been a friend of mine for years. We first met when he became the lead guitarist for the band my sister and I had (Mirror Image). Since then, Jody has done a lot of things including opening his own studio in Georgia. So, Battlefield Recording Studios is where Katie will be hammering (or plucking) away until the job is done.

Getting some suggestions.

A couple of great things about working with Jody and Battlefield Recording is that we have worked together in the past and we understand Katie’s musical influences. But the greatest thing is that Jody is a true follower of Christ. It was no problem for him when Katie asked, even before she strummed a chord, “Can we pray, first?”

Prayer

Be praying for Katie as we work afresh on her music. God has really gifted her and the world needs to hear it. Just pray that this new project will proceed smoothly so that the world may see Katie’s “good works, and glorify [her] Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 5:16).

Scratch tracks.

In the meantime, here is a simple little recording (it’s not perfect – I recorded it on my iPhone in the living room) of Katie playing and singing a cover of Group One Crew’s song, “Fearless.”

The Voice of the Video

Yes, I know this is the 3rd post in one day, but it’s been snowing. What else was I supposed to do?

The Video

It was only my second Monday Monkey video, but it still remains to be one of my favorites.

“There’s a Monkey at the Wheel” was my first music video, but I was not the one singing. As a matter of fact, I got a former American Idol contestant to do the vocals!

If you haven’t seen it, have fun watching it for the first time…or the second, or third, or fourth 😉

The Voice

Lauren Huckabee, Mr. Monkey, and Me

Lauren Huckabee, Mr. Monkey, and Me

The voice behind this video was a young lady named Lauren Huckabee. The reason I bring this up now is because Lauren is singing with a group that is rising rapidly up the gospel charts, Rhonda Frye and Riverside.

On top of that, Lauren has published her first blog post. In it she shares her past, one full of drugs, alcohol, and danger. But more than that, she gives glory to God for sparing her life and giving her hope.

Please read Lauren’s story and pray for her. And, if you get a chance, listen to the real music she’s doing. I’m sure you will like it just as much, if not more, than any parody I’ve done.

So, You Think You’re Worthless?

My First Thoughts

It has been a little while since I woke up this morning. I have managed, despite a poor night’s sleep on a new memory-foam mattress pad, to get up, get dressed, and make myself a cup of coffee – all without eating any turkey. Of course, that will come later, like in an hour or two, when the urge to make a left-over turkey sandwich is too much to ignore.

But the reason I am writing is because of the first thing that came into my mind this morning. Even before I raised my head from my pillow, before I prayed a prayer, before I even adjusted to the light sneaking through the blinds, something crossed my mind.

As I lay in bed this morning, I remembered a recent conversation in which I was asked, “Tell me, name one thing I do well?” Distraught and depressed, broken and humiliated by disabling pain, feeling like a burden to everyone else, this person said, “I’m worthless. I can’t do anything.”

The Violin

But as I lay in bed remembering those words, the image of a musical instrument, a violin, came to mind. Then I thought of my guitar and other instruments; each one capable of making beautiful, worshipful music, but only in the hands of one with talent enough to play.

I remembered those words spoken by another and applied them to the violin. The violin asked, “Tell me, name one thing I do well?” All I could think to reply was, “Nothing.” What can a violin do on it’s own but rest in a case, sit on a shelf, or gather dust in a closet? In the hands of one with no skill, with other things to do, and with no love for music, the violin could even become a wearisome burden over time.

In the wrong hands the violin is “worthless.” It has no value, no worth, no ability, no projection, no tone, and no song on it’s own. Alone, it really can’t do anything.

The Master

Then, right on cue, another thought exploded in my brain. What are we but instruments in the Master’s hands? We have no ability on our own. The violin never plays itself. The only way a musical instrument can ring out notes of joyous praise is when it is given life by the energy of the Musician.

But some may say, “I’m not a violin, a guitar, or anything like that.” Maybe so, but in the hands of a skilled musician even a trash can can bring an audience to its feet.

You may not feel like you’re valuable. You may feel worthless. But don’t believe the lie of the Enemy! Your value is not determined by what you can do, or what you look like, or by what others think, but by how much the Master was willing to pay.

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” – 1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV

Dear friend, don’t let your inadequacies, your mistakes, or your disabilities make you feel worthless. Jesus Christ, God’s Son, thought you were worth dying for, and willingly shed His blood to purchase your soul. In your own strength you may be incapable of anything but being a burden on others, but in the hands of the Master, your life can be an instrument of praise in the concert of the ages.

Who knows? You may already be on stage … so don’t give up … the audience may be ready to applaud.

Community Christmas Chorus

A New Thing

Every once in a blue-moon-while I try something new, something out of my comfort zone. So, when I was asked if I’d like to sing with a barber shop-style men’s chorus, I had apprehensions. I mean, was it time to do something new? Did I need to wait until the next blue moon?

CCCCOnRisers

Practicing on the risers. Can you pick me out on the right? (Photo Credit: Steve Wixson)

You see, our new choir director, Chuck Wilson, sings with the venerable Choo Choo Chorus. He had been inviting me to come join a community chorus for Christmas, but I didn’t know if I would really be up to it, or if I would like it. I was wrong on both accounts.

Singing acapella with a bunch of other talented men has given me the opportunity to ride on their coattails. The opportunity to sit under the instruction of such an experienced music director, Paul Blazeck, makes me smile as much as I sing. But hearing 4-part harmony sung by 80 men gives me goose bumps.

CaptureI would encourage you, if you are in the area, to come hear the Chattanooga Community Christmas Chorus and the Choo Choo Chorus during the month of December. My little girl, Haley, not knowing what to expect, came with me to practice and left saying, “That was awesome!” You’ll say the same thing, too.

(BTW, Jason Sneed, one of our writers at Proverbial Thought.com is in the picture on the left. He’s singing tenor.)

A Future Thing

But even though the guys in the chorus may sound “awesome,” I can hardly wait to hear how another choir will sound – the Heavenly choir.

Every time our men’s chorus sings “Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel,” I get chills. But we are just men, flawed in every way imaginable. What will it be like, I wonder, to hear voices innumerable in perfect, flawless harmony singing praise to God in His presence?

Mr. Blazek is always having to work with us amateurs in order to get a half-way decent sound. What will it be like when millions of the redeemed let loose with vocal chords untouched by sin, but empowered with joy unspeakable and full of glory?

Hallelujah! I’m getting chills and tearing up just thinking about it!

Monday Monkey (Whadaya Do?) Episode 39

Crazy Songs

Have you ever had a song that you couldn’t get out of your head? Sometimes they’re so bad you’d think Myley Cyrus had written them just to give you bad dreams.

Then there are songs that are so bad they’re CRAZY GOOD, like THIS one!

If you keep repeating it in your head, over and over, it will drown out the Miley Cyrus nightmares.
