Those Were the Days

It was 1989, I believe.

It was back in the day when I worked in nuclear field services with Combustion Engineering, and then later with ABB.

It was back in the day when I flew to different nuclear plants to work for weeks at a time, 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It was a day when I could go up to any cockpit of any jet and ask to take a picture…and never get any grief.

It was a day when one pilot said, “Here, son, why don’t you just sit in my seat and put on my hat and let me take your picture.”

The engines were still spooling and my hand was on the throttles!

It was a day long before 9/11.

Man, those were the days!

I miss them.

Were those glasses huge, or was my head smaller?

When You Vote…

Your VOTE should be more than a calculated bet.

Your VOTE should be more than a strategic move to benefit a party.

Your VOTE should be, if possible, more than a compromise; it should be a statement.

Your VOTE should be – it SHOULD be – your stamp of approval, one that signifies the person for whom you are voting is the best possible choice.

Your VOTE should NOT be based on statistics.

YOUR vote SHOULD be based on YOUR understanding, NOT public opinion.

voteYour right to VOTE is NOT a true right; it’s a PRIVILEGE. Certain inalienable rights are given by God (i.e., life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness); the privilege to vote was bought with human capital (the blood of our soldiers). DON’T waste the opportunity afforded to you by the lives of others!

Remember, our Forefathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor so that you could have a voice in who governs you. However, those for whom you vote these days have nothing to lose, but everything to gain. Hold them accountable!

Your VOTE is a sacred trust. DON’T betray it.

Just the Sound of BB’s

This post was first published in 2013.

Now that it’s an election year, it’s time for a reminder.

The attached video is not graphic, but hopefully disturbing. It is not gross or disgusting, only sobering.

Please listen to the sound of BB’s in a tin can.

I agree with the author of this video – God help us!

Here is another video you should watch. It is of an abortion survivor. Very powerful.

But you know what, I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that there is hope for those who have had abortions. Watch and listen to my friends (who I used to play bass guitar with), Adam and Kathy Glover (Adam is now a pastor). This was from several years ago.

We were at their home when this aired, and you should have seen the emails that flooded Kathy’s computer.

Kathy had abortions, but God has brought healing. Now they devote much of their time reaching out to those who struggle with the guilt of past and hidden sin.

A Tragic Loss

To the family of Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court Antonin Scalia (3/11/36 – 2/13/16), you are in our prayers. May the God of all comfort bring you peace at this time of mourning.

Your nation mourns with you.

Justice Scalia was one of a rare breed of principled, God-fearing men, never afraid to speak the truth, even when public opinion might be drifting in a different direction.

Antonin_Scalia_Official_SCOTUS_PortraitJustice Scalia believed that the Constitution of the United States was not something to be twisted into an adulterated tool of political correctness. He also decried the current tendency of the Supreme Court to “make law” instead of simply interpreting it.

Persuade your fellow citizens it’s a good idea and pass a law. That’s what democracy is all about. It’s not about nine superannuated judges who have been there too long, imposing these demands on society.” – Antonin Scalia

The First Amendment has lost a champion.

Pax Romana vs. Pax Obama

Tipped Over

If I was a tea pot, like the red one sitting on my kitchen stove, there would be a long, tall stream of steam shooting skyward out of my head – or at least sideways out of my ears.

IMG_9903The time that our current president has been in office has been the equivalent of turning up the burner under the pot a notch at a time. Each year he has turned the dial, cranked up the heat, and slowly but surely caused my emotions to boil.

The whistle from the kettle hit full pitch when I heard from Sec. of State John Kerry that our sailors were released by the Iranians as a result of “negotiations,” which are meant to make us “safe” and “strong.”

Bovine excrement!

Whatever happened to the America I love? Whatever happened to projecting power and authority? Whatever happened to “peace through strength”? All we have now is capitulation through cowardice. It’s time this little teapot pour out what’s inside before I explode!

Pax vs. Pax

Long ago, from around 27 B.C. till around 180 A.D., when Rome was the world power, they managed to maintain a “miraculous” amount of peace. This long and unprecedented time was called the Pax Romana, or “Roman Peace.” Among other things, it ensured its citizens of safe travel, safe access to trade, and just treatment under the law. But what brought about this peace, and what maintained it?

The peace of Rome was maintained with fear, pure and simple. However, the kind of fear that kept the peace was not the kind ISIS is famous for. No, the fear that kept this peace was the understanding that breaking the law had consequences. No matter who you were, or how powerful you were, the rule of law was supreme. Pax Romana epitomized the concept of “rule of law.”

For example, in two different cases the Apostle Paul was treated unjustly by local officials, but then used fear of Roman law to make his persecutors tremble. In Acts 16:35-40 we read of where Paul had been beaten and jailed. When the magistrates of Philippi sent word through a jailer that Paul and his team could be released, Paul would have none of it.

“But Paul said to them, ‘They beat us in public without a trial, although we are Roman citizens, and threw us in jail. And now are they going to smuggle us out secretly? Certainly not! On the contrary, let them come themselves and escort us out! ‘ “ – Acts 16:37 HCSB

When the magistrates got the word, they were greatly afraid and did exactly what the Apostle Paul asked. Why? Because what they had done could have cost them their lives. You just didn’t treat a Roman citizen that way!

The peace of Obama is maintained by bowing, cowering, capitulating, appeasing, and selling our people down the river. Seeing pictures of our sailors on their knees, hands over their heads, and surrendering their weapons to an enemy that shouldn’t have been able to get within a thousand yards of them is supposed to make me thankful for a nuclear agreement with Iran…but it only makes me steam!

This frame grab from Tuesday, January 12, 2016 video by the Iranian state-run IRIB News Agency, shows detention of American Navy sailors by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the Persian Gulf, Iran. The 10 U.S. Navy sailors detained by Iran after their two small boats allegedly drifted into Iranian territorial waters around one of Iran's Persian Gulf islands a day earlier have been freed, the United States and Iran said Wednesday. Had it been Roman sailors (with satellite, air, and naval support), negotiations would have never been necessary. Iran would have rather back-stroked scratched and naked in a pool of Great White sharks than humiliate the most powerful military in the world.

But we have Obama, not “Romana.” So let us drink tea.

Please, Daddy! Just try it!

Fish

I like tuna fish (mostly). I like it when it comes out of a can or when it is dolled up with a little Tuna Helper.

I like catfish, just as long as I can find all the bones and not choke.

I like whatever kind of fish my black brethren fry up in big pots. Honestly, it wasn’t until about three years ago that I attended my first “fish fry.” It was fantastic! One of my daughters and I were the only white people there and we didn’t have any idea what to expect, so when we were asked if we wanted mustard, hot sauce, and slaw on our white bread, what else could we say but, “Of course!” Heavenly, I tell you. Heavenly.

I like perch, brim, and bass caught fresh and pan fried on the shore. Oh…my…goodness!

I even like fish and chips.

But I DO NOT LIKE SUSHI!

Yellow Tail

Yesterday I went out to lunch with someone who picked up the bill. Since I didn’t have to pay, I chose not to be picky when it came to where we ate.

“Do you know where (a certain Japanese restaurant) is?” he asked. “I think so,” I replied. “Great! I’ll meet you there at 11:30.”

When my daughter, Katie, found out where we were going to eat she insisted I try one particular item – the “Yellow Fin” (as in raw, uncooked Yellow Tail tuna).

I did. Here’s the proof. I took a picture.

photo

Why I Don’t Like Sushi

It’s raw. Raw is good for things like vegetables and language, but not meat.

It’s cold. Cold fish is just wrong…unless it’s tuna on lettuce.

It’s sticky. I like sticky rice. I like sticky candy. I don’t like sticky meat.

It’s practically flavorless. By “practically” I mean it has a little flavor, but not much. The flavor it does have is that of raw, cold, sticky, dead, fish market. If you have to eat it with ginger and wasabi to make it edible, it ain’t.

I’m an American. What we catch and kill we cook before we eat it. At least that’s the kind of American I am; all others are sushi-sissies.

and lastly,

I could take a laxative and have the same effect. Do I need to explain? At least the meeting went well.

In Response To Our Glorious Leader

It Is Written

By now most of you have already watched or listened to President Obama’s tearful speech announcing his new executive mandates regarding guns and background checks.

Since he specifically mentioned the “gun lobby” and “the lies” they supposedly tell, I thought it fair to post this video, not just on Facebook and other social media, but on my blog as well.

On Paper?

In his speech Mr. Obama said that he understood we have certain rights because they are written down “on paper.” Interesting, especially coming from a self-acclaimed Constitutional professor, don’t you think?

Our rights are not written on “paper,” but on parchment – and it’s called the Constitution of the United States.

I feel sorry for those who took his classes; they probably didn’t learn much.

First Video of the Year – But No Monkeys

Regularity

Even though I plan on consuming more fiber, that’s not what I’m talking about when I say “regularity.” No, I am going to endeavor to post more regularly this year (2016).

If I can manage a post of some kind every day, that will nearly triple my average. However, that means not all of my posts will be super-spiritual, in-depth, near-canon-quality essays capable of lifting your soul to heavenly heights.

Some will be short, stupid, or simply for fun. Something for everyone.

Something for Somebody

So, for the first Monday of the year here is a video. It’s not for everybody, I understand. It’s violent, messy, and childish.

On the other hand, it is creative, cathartic, and…well…childish. Don’t we all need to act a little childish sometimes?

This video is specifically for all of you out there who love explosives, creating things only to destroy them, and plastic toy soldiers. It’s also a video for all of you who just need to get a little frustration out of your system.

My daughter and I made a styrofoam “concrete” building, painted it, put plastic army men in it, invited some friends over on New Year’s Eve, and fired off 144 bottle rockets.

Enjoy!

Geode It All To Jesus

Holidays

Christmas has come and gone and the new year is just around the corner. That is why I have not been writing or reading much by way of blogs. It’s just been too hectic. However, I do hope you had a wonderful Christmas (and if you had snow I’m totally jealous).

One of the things that come with holidays is time off from work; when school is out I don’t have to drive a school bus. The downside to Christmas break is that I must go 3 weeks without that income. The upside is that I have more free time to do things with my children, including our exchange student, Freaya.

Lookout Mountain

Back in the middle of December, right after schools dismissed for the break, I decided to take Freaya and Haley (my youngest daughter) up to the top of Lookout Mountain for some free sightseeing. Lookout Mountain – famous for the “Battle Above the Clouds” and Rock City – is not far from where I live. You can actually see the mountain from our front yard.

Lookout Mountain in the distance, as seen from our front yard.

The Painting

On the top of Lookout Mountain are several things worth seeing, such as the Incline and Point Park. The view from the overlook at the Incline (the world’s steepest railway – it goes straight up the side of the mountain) is wonderful, especially on a clear day. Likewise, the view from Point Park, famous for it’s iconic view of the Tennessee River and Moccasin Bend is equally stunning.

But it’s in the museum and gift shop next to Point Park where a large painting of the Battle of Lookout Mountain is kept. This was what I really wanted to take Freaya, our exchange student from South Korea, to see. The massive 13’x30′ painting was painted by James Walker, an Englishman. He was paid an incredible $20,000 commission for the work which was completed in 1874.

Mountain Memories

On the way down Lookout Mountain I decided to make a quick stop at Mountain Memories, a quaint gift shop right beside the tracks of the Incline. Believe it or not, this was the very first time I had ever stopped at this shop, even though I have lived in Chattanooga most of my life. I guess that’s typical for locals.

Anyway, Mountain Memories is a family-owned business which has been in operation for nearly 90 years (run by the granddaughter of the one who discovered Ruby Falls)! Unlike many other shops, this place sell some really unique items, including handmade quilts and genuine Civil War artifacts, like a bone saw and “carved bullets” (lead shot with teeth marks, the kind left by soldiers having arms and legs amputated – where the term “bite the bullet” came from). I highly recommend you stopping by when you’re in town.

Broken and Beautiful

Like I said, there were a lot of unique and unusual gifts for sale at Mountain Memories, but it was some rather common little geodes that caught Freaya’s attention. With all the artifacts from the days of mortal combat on display, Freaya asked an honest question when she first glimpsed the pile of round stones: “Why are they selling rocks?

Haley sorta laughed, then picked up one of the “rocks” and showed her – they were geodes, and one had been broken open.

photo 1 (8)

“These are not just rocks,” Haley said. She went on to tell our guest that what makes them special is that although they may look like rocks, it’s only when you break them that you can see how beautiful they are on the inside.

She said, “You know, it’s a lot like people. We may be ugly on the outside, but it’s when we are broken that you get to see the beautiful on the inside…and what makes us beautiful is Jesus.”

That’s so true, Haley. I’m sorry for what you’ve been put through, but I’m glad you understand what can come from it: the beauty of Christ for all to see. We owe it all to Jesus!

That was a free field trip worth taking!

The Face of Terrorism in America?

Colorado

You may have already heard about what happened in and around a Colorado Planned Parenthood facility. Three people were killed, including a police officer, by a shooter by the name of Robert Lewis Dear, age 57.

My heart is broken by the loss of life. Even though I believe abortion is the taking of an innocent life, I don’t condone attacking a Planned Parenthood office. If that was all Robert Dear was doing, then he had no justification for his actions. What he did was murder.

But right off the bat, even before the whole story had been released (and we still don’t know all the details as of yet), accusations started flying; talk of gun control ramped up once again; and anyone and everyone with a Facebook or Twitter account made their own two cents known.

Cue Montel Williams…

I don’t know what to think about Montel Williams. For the longest I have always viewed him as more of a moderate, likable, patriotic kind of guy. However, what he posted on his Facebook page after the Colorado shooting left me stunned and disheartened.

The face of terrorism in America is Robert Lewis Dear, 57, who today felt it necessary to take a Planned Parenthood in Colorado Springs hostage while using the police for target practice in some sort of dramatic pro-life statement (which is ironic since the vast majority of the pro-life movement correctly interprets pro-life to mean not killing anyone).

Multiple people are dead, including one police officer who died as he lived – bravely. My prayers go out.

There is nothing more dangerous than a nut with an idea – in this country, those nuts often look like 57 y/o Robert Lewis Dear. Let’s not forget the face of evil often looks pretty darn American. – Montel Williams (from a post on his Facebook wall)

One common thread holding Mr. Williams’ statement together was what he considered the “face of terrorism” and the “face of evil” in America.

The Face of Terrorism and Evil

Montel Williams stated that the “face of terrorism in America is Robert Lewis Dear” who wanted to make a “dramatic pro-life statement…” He also stated that there is “nothing more dangerous than a nut with an idea…” Really?

So, if we were to parse out Mr. Williams’ statement, what characteristics should we be looking for in order to help us spot the poster boy of terrorism and evil in America? Based on Montel Williams’ profiling skills, from what kind of person should we be hiding?

  • A middle-aged white male (with a beard).
  • A white, male pro-lifer.
  • A middle-aged, white, male, pro-lifer with who owns guns.
  • A middle-aged, white male with an “idea” that is not pro-abortion.

Essentially, “nuts” that kill innocent people are most often white, male, middle-aged Americans with guns, and who are pro-life.

Seriously?

Contextual Terrorism and Evil

In a broad sense, the most common face of terrorism and evil in the world today is not American, not Caucasian, not Christian, and it doesn’t care a rat’s a** about the dignity of human life.

However, the true face of terrorism and evil in America is hardly the average middle-aged pro-lifer with a gun. The true face of terror – well, it really depends on the context.

If you are an average American citizen, the true face of terror is the one that makes you lock your doors at night, especially if you have anything worth taking. It’s the face that makes you nervous to walk down your street at night, or carry your groceries to your car.

For the average American, the face of terror and evil is the one that makes you wish you owned a gun, and if you do, get a permit to carry it. The face of evil the average American fears is the one who keeps you from picking up hitchhikers or giving a dollar to a stranger. It’s the face that makes you have to do background checks for nursery workers.

But in another context…if statistics were the only issue…it’s the unborn children in America, who die by the thousands every day, that should be scared. If they could see that face, how would they describe it?  I guess it’s because it uses forceps and scissors, instead of guns, that its face isnt’t associated with evil?

The TRUE Face of Terrorism and Evil

Let’s be honest, the average American is not afraid of middle-aged white guys with ideas any more or less than the black or Hispanic teen in a hoodie; we’re fearful of everyone!

The average American has no idea what the next drunk driver, mugger, identity thief, rapist, or child molester is going to look like. So, to say that there is a “face” that is more poster-worthy than the next is nothing more than racist fear-mongering.

The true face of terrorism in America (and the world) wants what it wants, hates it when you say no, and will stop at nothing to take it. That face is attached to every heart guided by hate, envy, jealousy, lust, a lack of forgiveness, and pride – not simply a nut with a gun.

Transform the heart and you’ll transform the face, regardless the context.
