Hupomenō : a Daughter’s Suggestion

Writer’s Block

Believe it or not, I have been enduring a strange kind of writer’s block. It is a form of writer’s block, however, so the full power thereof has been turned away (that’s a 2 Timothy 3:5 pun). Full-blown writer’s block would have left me with no ideas…no creativity…no thoughts…no opinions. What I have is simply a lack of energy.

Really, there have been a lot of topics crying out for my opinion. The news has been full of stories needing to be discussed at length, but am I up to it? Have I had enough sleep?

For Example(s)

If I wanted to take the time, here are some subjects on which I would love to tell you what I think and why. The only problem is that they all make me ill.

  • Miley Cyrus.Oh, Anthony, you shouldn’t pick on her and be all negative and stuff like that…you will never win her over by being judgmental and critical,” they say. Really? For the record, I am more concerned with the little girls who are now becoming sexually degenerate while trying to imitate this 20 year-old spawn of Madonna. There is sooooooo much I want to say, but Hannah Montana fans might get angry and point a foam finger in my face (and who knows where that has been?).
  • New York Bike Gang. All I will say is that had those crotch-rocket-riding hoodlums tried doing what they did to the family in the Range Rover down here in Tennessee, there would have been a lot more broken than one guy’s leg. Switching lanes without warning is a common, heartfelt practice in Chattanooga, so I can imagine the motorcycle parts strewn across the highway. Of course, there’s also the fact that Southerners believe in the Second Amendment.
  • Government Shutdown. My blood pressure is rising just thinking about it. Those shutting down the government and closing open-air WWII memorials are still getting paid while common people suffer. And do you know what’s so ironic? There are more people guarding places than used to work there when they were open!
  • High School Dance Teams. “Don’t say anything, Anthony! Don’t offend anybody, Anthony!” I can’t help it. People, when you think it is appropriate for your underage daughter to “shake her thing” in barely-there clothes…perform moves only an experienced, professional pole dancer should know…and when you applaud to a guy with a microphone as he says of your daughter and her fellow dancers when they spread their legs on their backs in front of a stadium full of football fans, “I told you they were bad,” you’re not a parent, you’re an enabler!

See, I have things I could write about. There’s just too much to say about too many things.

Hupomenō?

You must be wondering what the title of this post is all about. Well, it all started this evening when I told Katie, my daughter, that I was having a “form of writer’s block.” She asked, “Do you want me to give you a random suggestion?” I said, “sure.”

hupomenoTwo minutes later she comes to me with a picture and a word: hupomenō (ὑπομένω). “Write about this,” she said.

The word is a Greek word which means “to remain under,” or, “to remain under the test in a God-honoring manner, not seeking to escape it but eager to learn the lessons it was sent to teach.”* But it could also mean standing firm by holding one’s ground (Mt 10:22; 24:13; Mk 13:13) and persevering in spite of difficulty (2 Tim 2:10).** The words that  hupomenō is most commonly translated into are “patience,” and “endure.”

Katie’s a godly young girl, so she wrote this on her hand as a reminder to be patient and to “endure.”

Patiently Learning

So, what have we learned? How can I close this post?

I will patiently endure the pressures of this world, and seek to glorify Christ as I persevere through difficulties. But if my patience runs out, well…

…just keep that stupid foam finger away from me, Miley. And for Billy Ray’s sake, PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!

Proverbial Thoughts

Commercials

proverbial thought pictureEvery once in a while I do a commercial for Proverbial Thought. It is my other site which features several others and me commenting daily on the book of Proverbs. Every day we share personal thoughts based on life experience and study of the selected scripture.

Just recently Chris Jordan wrote a post (which I can’t find) on his blog which listed several of the last posts he had written on Proverbial Thought. That’s when I thought to myself, “Why don’t I do that?”

So, below you will find links to a few “thoughts” I’ve had. I would encourage you, if you haven’t already, to subscribe to Proverbial Thought and receive some real wisdom (not necessarily from me) on a daily basis.

Ye ol’ Proverbial Links

Generous Eyes (Prov. 22:9)

Just Wait Till You Get Home (Prov. 24:19-20)

Kissing the Truth (Prov. 24:23-26)

Muddied Water (Prov. 25:26)

Happy HUMP DAY! Go camel..go camel…go camel…

Your Strength Is Your Enemy

Proverbial Sermon

If you don’t go to church anywhere, you could listen to an edited message of mine that will air on local radio this evening (Sundays at 5 pm on WFLI, AM 1070).

I recently was impressed by a post that Chris Jordan did for Proverbial Thought (one of my other blogs); it really convicted me of my need to be stronger in the face of adversity. Chris commented on Proverbs 24:10, which says: “If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.”

The next day, however, when I followed Chris’ post by commenting on Proverbs 24:11-12, I found a nugget of gold that was not lying on the surface; it had to be dug out of the mine. That little nugget became the basis for this sermon.

If you have a few minutes, take a listen. What you hear might just encourage you.

4 Years with WordPress

Happy Anniversary to Me!

Wordpress anniversary thank youBelieve it or not, as of yesterday I have been blogging as The Recovering Legalist for 4 years! So that means I am no in my fifth year of blogging, I guess. Actually, I did start blogging with Blogger before I came to WordPress, but that didn’t go so well. It was a blog for my church, so writing posts about personal issues and Monday Monkeys wasn’t appropriate. And anyway, I didn’t like Blogger.

Friends and Enemies

Over the last four years I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people. Most of my followers are people I have never met in person, but know only through the internet. Some of those followers I consider close friends, even if we have never even met (I don’t recommend looking for dating relationships that way, though). On the other hand, I have also made a few enemies, or should I say, established non-friendly relationships. A few of my posts have attracted the ire of some hateful, angry, arrogant souls who diametrically oppose everything I believe. Too bad for them, I say.

Wonderful Opportunities

The last four years have given me the opportunity to impact the lives of people around the globe. How amazing is that! I think the last time I counted it was over 140 countries in which this blog has been viewed. Who knows what impact it has made? All I do know for sure is that there have been a few people who have come forward and told me that what I have written in the past has helped change their lives – literally. Some have actually been set free from legalistic churches and the bonds of legalism. Many have found encouragement through posts I have written during my own times of pain.

Only God knows the full ramifications of this blog and others like it.

Thank You!

I know that there are some of you who follow this blog just to get noticed. Some of you have read this blog by accident, only to realize you didn’t like what you saw. But to those of you who regularly read my feeble attempts at writing, I thank you. All of you Christian bloggers out there, keep up the good work. As long as this form of medium is available, let’s use it for the glory of God. We may never know on this earth who we are reaching, but one day we will know as we are known.

God Bless!

Monkey Survived

He Survived!

I was so worried, but Mr. Monkey came through the wash without falling apart. Washing a family heirloom is not something I do very often, especially 30 year-old puppets.

You see, I took Mr. Monkey with us to the beach in South Carolina. There he experienced getting buffeted by the salty waves crashing onto the shore. Fortunately, he didn’t need sunscreen.

The only problem is that Mr. Monkey came out of the wash fine, but ended up looking like he got a “perm” after only a few minutes in the dryer. He’s still a little damp, so he’s just hanging around, for now.

Well, signing off again from the WordPress iPhone app. Have a great Thursday!

Washing Monkey

I’m not sure about this.

I just did something that is making me sick. I just put Mr. Monkey in a washing machine.

Even though this is supposed to be one of those fancy machines, I’m still nervous – very nervous. My wife told me there is nothing inside the machine to hurt him, and with the setting set for “delicates,” it should be OK. I hope so.

I’ll never forget that look if something goes wrong.

My dad bought this monkey back in 1983. That means Mr. Monkey is 30 years old! Who puts a 30 year-old family artifact in a washing machine?!

Here we are in Charleston, SC at my daughter and son-in-law’s house. I’m using my iPhone to make this post and thinking of the footage I filmed for next week’s Monday Monkey. Was that Mr. Monkey’s last episode? Oh, I hope not!

1000th Subscriber

1000 FollowersWoo Hoo!

Guess what, everybody? Just the other day this blog reached a major milestone – 1000 subscribers! Isn’t that cool?

It wasn’t that long ago – actually it was in October of 2011 – that I was doing all I could to come up with 100 subscribers. Can you believe that was the beginning of Mr. Monkey and the Monday Monkey segments?

Meet Muriel

Say hello to Muriel Debroy! Miss 1000!

This lovely Canadian real estate agent and food expert became my 1000th subscriber, and I am so proud to introduce her.

Muriel DebroyI talked with Muriel, today. She was kind enough to allow me to publish her picture and say a bunch of great stuff about her. The sad part is that I was about to go into a meeting when she returned my call, so I couldn’t talk long. But, even though we didn’t get to talk long, I found out that…

  1. She can call me cheaper than I can call her. International calls can get expensive!
  2. She deals with real estate, and Canada has a lot of that.
  3. People don’t know how to cook, but she’s the go-to woman for that problem. Sorry guys, she’s married.

Make sure you check out her website. I’m know she’ll appreciate it.

Blessed

Seriously, I want to thank all of my subscribers. Each one of you is a blessing, including the ones of whom I have no blooming idea why you read this blog (and you know who you are).

I hope all of you understand that I appreciate you and care about you. That is why I write what I write. May you be encouraged, challenged, strengthened, enlightened, and ultimately pointed towards a greater understanding of what it means to live a life of grace.

It’s only 1000 subscribers, not 10,000 or a million, but I’m still blessed.

To God be the glory; great things He has done.
