Forgetful Fridays (500th post!)

Thursday Thoughts

Last week I decided it would be fun to start a new series of posts entitled “Thursday Thoughts.” Then, just like clockwork, I forgot to write anything when Thursday came back around.

Last Thursday I wrote about several things that had been on my mind, but things I didn’t want to spend a lot of time treating individually. But this time, instead of on Thursday, I will use today (Friday) to vent my mind. The things I forgot to mention on Thursday will now be mentioned on a Friday, hence “Forgetful Fridays.”

Things I Forgot

The following are some things I have been thinking about (about which I have been thinking?). Most are stories that have either been in the news or on the world wide web of lies.

“Concrete Endangerment”

If you live in Germany, I feel sorry for you; evidently you have a government that still harbors a secret love of Hitler’s old ways. You have taken the Wunderlich’s children away from them indefinitely out of fear that they may, of all the horrible things in the world, HOMESCHOOL them! O.M.G.!!! A German judge ruled that homeschooling constitutes “concrete endangerment” of children. Really?

Wunderlich1

The Wunderlich family. Children taken by German government.

However, if you live in America (like I do), a country run by liberals who idolize totalitarian governments where one man controls all, then I feel sorry for you, especially if you educate your children at home (like we do). How long do you think it will be before our Justice Department will attempt to mirror German judges? Has not our own Attorney General Holder determined that the Romeikes should return to Germany, even though the government will take away their children when they return?

“Rage Spiral”

Have you ever gotten into a “rage spiral?” I have had days when one thing built upon another until I “lost it” and burst out with anger. I don’t know what it would take to send me down a spiraling vortex of rage. However, I do know what it takes to send the producer of HBO’s “Girls” into a “rage spiral.”

lena of girls

Lena Dunham

I don’t watch HBO, so I have never seen the comedy of which I speak. All I know is what I can gather from the news, and most of that tells me “Girls” is a debauched, nudity-filled bunch of garbage. But when a reporter questioned why the creator and director of the program, Lena Dunham, had to get naked so often that the producer, Jenni Konner, said she went into a “rage spiral.”

Stop and think about it! A woman goes ballistic, she gets all indignant, all because a reporter questioned why there was so much nudity in her television program! Now, to be fair the “hit piece” was intentionally cruel with regards to Lena Dunham’s body, and was rightfully labeled “inappropriate” by Konner. But what is more inappropriate, criticizing a naked woman’s body, or parading it around for profit? Good grief!

“Satanic Statue”

Talk about spiraling descents into total insanity and rage, where has the nation of our Founding Fathers gone? Not only do we have people who object to a Ten Commandments monument on the grounds of the Oklahoma state capital, but now the Satanists want their own monument right beside it – and we’re supposed to approve!

There used to be a day when something like this would not only be laughed out of the public forum, but those suggesting such a thing would be run out on a rail. This is not what our founders envisioned when they wrote our Constitution. This is not what they were thinking when they spoke of “freedom of religion.” And it was definitely NOT Satan who was being spoken of as the “Creator” who endows us with “certain unalienable rights.”

So here’s my thought on this: will the creators of the Satanic monument be upset or proud if/when their goat statue gets vandalized? I mean, wouldn’t that show that their followers were only acting out their individual, self-god beliefs? Unbelievable! except in a world that’s already on its way to hell in a hand-basket. I wonder if there’ll be monuments there?

Happy 2014!

I am sure you have heard it before now, but happy new year!

2013 was tough, but 2014 is a whole new ball game. So, let’s get out on the field and go for the goal.

God bless each of you, even those who disagree with me. May you have an ever-growing sense His presence.

Try not to have too much fun as you party. Just kidding. Or, maybe not (I’m still recovering, you know).

Hope Springs…from a Public School Principal

It is not often that I “reblog” a blog post, but this one was too much to pass up. I lived in Soddy-Daisy, so I am proud of fellow pastor, Alan Stewart, and the principle of Sale Creek Middle/High School. Way to go!

Y’all are not going to believe this. Well, some of you may.

RechpicA dear friend of mine, Alan Stewart, is a longtime pastor in the Mayberry-esque East Tennessee town of Soddy-Daisy. His church has become known in recent years for its crazy-effective Vacation Bible School programs, which Alan wrote and based on the public domain characters from those incredible children’s tales written by Christians – Beauty and the Beast, Wizard of Oz, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan – after realizing several years of other VBS programs had been entertaining, but not effective.

Alan and the church are a go-to resource when the town needs, well, anything. Food, shelter, counsel, money, a listening ear, an answer to a troubling situation. They are what the church is supposed to be, at least in so much as I’ve known them the past few years.

Tell Me About You

Welcome

profile picThere used to be a day when I literally dreamed of having more than 100 followers. I even came up with Monday Monkey in order to encourage people to subscribe. Now, believe it or not, I get several new subscribers/followers every day. Some, however, look a little suspicious, if you know what I mean.

Nevertheless, welcome! If you have subscribed to this blog only to get me to look at your advertisements or crazy ideas, good luck. If, on the other hand, you are following this blog for legitimate reasons, then I hope you find encouragement, hope, humor, and something to think about.

Details

So, out of curiosity, could you tell me how you came to first view The Recovering Legalist? Could you tell me why you subscribed?

If possible, could you tell me a little about where you are located (what country, state, etc.). It always amazes me how one blog can reach the world.

God bless!

Whose Agenda?

Boy Scouts

You have probably heard of how the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) recently changed its policy toward homosexuality.  No longer will a scout be denied membership “on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone.” This was seen as a victory for gay-rights advocates and activists across the country, especially those who are open about their sexual preferences and activity.

However, as reported in the New York Times, this will most likely NOT be the last policy change. The very ones who led the Scouts to make this change want to see more changes made, and this is only the tip of the iceberg…

The policy change, effective January 2014, is unlikely to bring peace to the Boy Scouts as they struggle to keep a foothold in a swirling cultural landscape, with renewed lobbying and debate already starting …The Scouts did not consider the even more divisive question of whether to allow openly gay adults and leaders. This drew criticism from advocates for gay rights, who called the decision a breakthrough but vowed to continue pressing the Scouts to allow gay members of all ages.

It seems to me that the decision made by the Boy Scouts was not one made simply for the good of the boys, but as a result of political, social, and financial pressure…

The top national leaders of the Boy Scouts, who pledge fealty to God and country, had urged the change in the face of vehement opposition from conservative parents and volunteers, some of whom said they would quit the organization. But the vote put the Scouts more in line with the swift rise in public acceptance of homosexuality, especially among younger parents who are essential to the future of an institution that has been losing members for decades. (New York Times)

As to the Lord

There will always be those who want to pressure us into doing things, but we must keep in mind that when all is said and done, politics, societal changes, membership roles, and public opinion are not God. Believers must determine who they want to please more: God, or man.

The Apostle Paul taught the church at Colossae a truth that is very applicable to today. He said that “whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ” (Col. 3:23-24).

By all accounts, against years of precedent, the BSA changed its policy to reflect a need to please men. By doing so it has voluntarily subjected itself to future attacks which will completely undermine the moral foundation on which the organization was built. “Fealty to God” has been exchanged for the fear of man.

Happy Mother’s Day

My Mother

It may come as a shock to all of you, but I do have a mother. Yes, there is a woman who claims responsibility for allowing me to come into the world.

My mother’s name is Marie. I won’t tell you how old she is, but she’s older than me. She is also not in the best of health, so your prayers would be appreciated.

DSC_0065My mother worked in the blood bank and lab at Erlanger Hospital for 46 years until she retired. She started working there when blood was still in black and white, long before most of the modern staff was even born. She went to college for four years to learn how to do a job that few today can do without computers.

My mother is also a godly woman who has read through her Bible countless times, verse by verse, circling the number each time. She is also the widow of a godly man who loved her. She never remarried.

Mother’s Day Song

There are a lot of songs celebrating Christmas, but few celebrating mothers. Therefore, last year I decided to write my own song for Mother’s Day.

I hope it brings honor to the woman who birthed me, beat me with a belt, and bears me up with her prayers. If you like it, sing it to your mother or grandmother. Even if they don’t like it, they will say they do – that’s what mothers do.

Have Soap Box, Will Travel

Will You Have Me?

Summer is just around the corner (hallelujah), and that means I will not be driving a school bus during the week (double hallelujah). My schedule, therefore, will be much more flexible – and I would like to get out of town.

me and buddySo, here’s the question: would you like to have me to come speak at your church or event?

I already have two arms and legs, so my expenses would be minimal. Just get me there, feed me, and make sure I have enough to take my wife out to dinner when I get home (paying for the kids’ braces is optional).

To keep things legitimate (there are some crazies out there), please leave a comment, send an email to PastorACBaker@yahoo.com, or send a request in writing to the following address:

Freedom!

I can’t tell you how free I feel! The other day I took a book with me to read while waiting for my little girl to get out of Wing Chun class. She asked, “Aren’t you tired of reading?” I said, “No, I’m just excited to be able to read what I want to, and not what I have to.”

I took my first college course in 1987. On Monday, April 29, I took my last. Over those 25 years I completed 10 years of actual schooling, four of which was non-accredited. Now, after all of that, it is so exciting to realize that I can pick up anything I want to study without having to worry about a grade.

[By the way, I completed my Masters with a 3.67 GPA!]

Thanks!

I want to thank David, Nick, Chris, and Jessie for filling in during my absence. The posts they wrote while I was taking time off to finish seminary were truly appreciated. If I do decide to go back one day for a higher degree, I hope they’re still around.

I would also like to thank all of the new followers who have come along in the last few weeks. Some of you will cancel once you realize what you’ve actually subscribed to – but I hope not.

Now, what do I write about first?
