Memories from My Sister’s Visit (2018)

Some of you may know I have a sister, but other of you may not. Her name is Rebecca Lee Gomes, and she lives in Germany (married to a German, Carlos).

Two months ago she came to visit after being gone from the States for 7 years. Fortunately in one way, unfortunately in others, while she was here, my mother suffered a severely broken leg. That limited what we were able to do because a couple of weeks were spent in hospitals.

Also, while Becky was here, one of our aunts passed away.

Nevertheless, we did get to see some things and do some things, including visit the Ark Encounter, the Creation Museum, the Air Force Museum, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (because we used to have a band, you know), all while taking my wife and our mom to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Just after Becky left I pulled together some photos and video made while she was here and created a little video on iMovie. Then I posted the video on YouTube for here to have it.

You may not get all the hidden humor, and you may not know all the faces, but you can watch the video, too, and get a little glimpse into our lives.

I’m gonna miss her.

Needing Inspiration

Too Much

Over the last few weeks I have had so much on my plate. If you could picture a platter, one with food falling off the side and onto the floor, that’s my life. There’s just a little too much going on.

Well, it might be more of a case of poor prioritizing. When I read of some of the greats of the past, I am ashamed at how little I have accomplished in my 40+ years. Maybe my plate is too full because poorly stacked chicken salad sandwiches take up more space.

Too Much Input

Then, there is the fact that over the last few weeks I have spent hours upon hours studying for a paper I was writing. The volume of material through which I waded nearly caused my little brain to short circuit. On top of that, I preached and wrote posts for ProverbialThought.com. Too much to absorb.

On a side note, I returned 14 books to the library, today. All of them were late, and at 25 cents a day it cost me $33.50!

Where to find Inspiration?

So, with my brain fried, I knew I needed to write, but I couldn’t think of any ideas. I needed inspiration. That’s when I turned to the best place to find conversation starters – the news.

Yes, when all else fails, and you can’t think of anything worth blowing your top over, check out the news channels, the local paper, or whatever. That’s what I did! Boy, did I find a winner!

Pilot Error

I came across the story of an Air Force pilot who crashed his F-22. His plane quit providing him air to breath, so he passed out and crashed. Simple? No. The Air Force blamed him for being distracted. No joke!

Capt. Jeff Haney was flying the Air Force’s next-generation stealth F-22 Raptor on a routine training mission in Alaska in November 2010 when a sudden malfunction cut off his oxygen completely. Capt. Haney never made a distress call but took his plane into a dive and, a little over a minute later, crashed into the winter wilderness at faster than the speed of sound.

After a lengthy investigation, an Air Force Accident Investigation Board could not find the cause of the malfunction but determined “by clear and convincing evidence” that in addition to other factors, Haney was to blame for the crash because he was too distracted by his inability to breathe to fly the plane properly [emphasis added].

Can you believe that? Seriously? I would have been a little distracted too, I guess. “Hey, uh, don’t bother me with all those details, folks, I have a little problem I’m dealing with…. I CAN’T BREATH!”

That was all the inspiration I needed.

Give Me Air

This is air I breath
This is air I breathe
Your holy presence
Living in me

And I … I’m desparate for you
And I … I’m lost without you

Air Force Removes God

I just read about another disturbing developement within the United States military. The Air Force removed “God” from the logo on one of their patches.

You see, a small group of God haters (sorry, that’s what they are) called the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers complained about the wording on a patch that read (in Latin) “Doing God’s Work with Other People’s Money.” You see, atheists can’t be going around doing God’s work – that would just be un…un…human, I guess.

In response to the wishes of those who care nothing for the wisdom of our Founding Fathers (see last post), Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley approved the wording to be changed to “Doing Miracles with Other People’s Money.

Doing Miracles?

  • First line from article in Wikipedia – “A miracle often denotes an event attributed to divine intervention.”
  • From Dictionary.com – “An effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause…Such an effect or event manifesting or considered as a work of God.”
  • From Meriam-Webster.com – “An extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs.”

It would seem to me that the choice of “miracle” was not just a compromise, but a statement. Coincidentally, it reminds me of another statement: “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.” – Isaiah 14:14

Removing “God” and replacing it with “Miracle” is not exactly making things religiously neutral. No, all it is doing is exchanging one God for another god – self. For you see, men still believe the lie first told to Eve, “YOU shall be as gods.”

When our Founding Fathers pledged to each other “our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor,” they did so with a “firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence.” What would they have to protect them today? A bunch of miracle-working atheists and freethinkers. Thank GOD they signed the Declaration of Independence when they did!

Take Action!

Please follow this link and send an email to Secretary Michael Donley insisting he restore the original wording on the RCO patch, then forward this to others.
