My Prize Won’t Break

The Million-Piece Trophy

Just a few minutes ago I heard the sad, sad (so sad I almost want to weep tears of sorrow – not!) news that someone accidentally broke Alabama’s national championship trophy. Sad! So sad.

Seriously, a clumsy parent (say goodbye to that scholarship) knocked over the handmade Waterford Crystal trophy (valued at $30K) and smashed it into little, tiny pieces (now they can share). Isn’t it amazing how quickly such a hard-earned symbol of accomplishment could become fodder for the dust pan.

 The Believer’s Prize

Thankfully, at the end of this race, the race of life, there awaits for the Christian something better than a football made of fancy glass. And what’s more, it won’t decay, be stolen (Matthew 6:19-20), or get broken by an overly-excited loved one.

All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. – 1Cr 9:25 NLT

  1. So true. Good analogy. I think they still have the pieces and will probably sell them in some way to adoring fans. I live in South Alabama and I can forsee earings and other things made from the stuff. Heard a news cast say they were trying to figure out what to do with the pieces.

    • I have to confess, I am reeeaaallly fighting the urge to reply to your comment with stereo-typical, anti-Alabama banter (that means “to speak in a witty or teasing manner” for the folks in Tuscaloosa). I’m sorry, I did it anyway, didn’t I? 😉

Oh well, worse comes to worse, I’m absolutely positive all the pieces could be turned into engagement rings.

  2. Haaaaaaaaaa – I am a Tennessee fan living in the midst of Bama fans – can you believe what I put up with? The worse things is that we are basketball fans living in a world of football. Basketball here is in slow motion. When I lived in KY, I saw more basketball games played like football – that is the way we like it! Here, the cheerleaders sit in the stands during high school games becasue it is too dangerous to be on the floor! Too dangerous, basketball in Alabama, dangerous?

  3. I like the engament ring idea – a ring made from the refuse of a broken trophy – lol
