What Happened In Vegas

For a long time people have said, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” However, I’ve always hated that saying, if for no other reason than that it promotes the false security of hidden sin.

What happened in Vegas last night cannot be hidden, even though what led up to it may never be fully understood. Regardless, the desire to commit wholesale murder is not likely the fruit of a seed planted in tender soil and fertilized with love, forgiveness, and grace.

No, what happened in Vegas was the result of evil taking root, hidden from sight, and allowed to mature. Someone planted seeds; someone watered them; no one could actually conceive what they were growing; but a harvest eventually came.

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. – Galatians 6:7

What happened in Vegas probably didn’t even begin in Vegas, but it’s sure not to stay there; the ripples of pain have already spread around the world.

  1. Well said, Anthony. When our nation stops trying to “fix” the symptoms and deals with the disease, then we can see our nation be healed!

  2. Very well said. What a tragedy and unfortunately in times of such grief & tragedy we tend to blame God and question “why did this happen?”. But we need to remember that God is what kept so many safe and spared so many. I have a dear friend who says we all have a plan and our time on earth is pre-determined. Do you believe this? I always appreciate hearing your perspective as I have great respect for you.

    • Respect for me? Oh, now I feel the pressure! 😉

      Just a quick search provided the following two verses, and that when I only searched the word “times.”

      Acts 1:7 (KJV)
      And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

      Acts 17:26 (KJV)
      And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

      There is a constant tension between two truths: God’s sovereignty and man’s freedom – which God designed. We are not automatons (robots), yet God did foreordain Jesus should die to save us from sin. It’s a very deep subject to study, but God is good, and I trust Him. I’m not a Calvinist, however 😉

  3. My nephew and his wife were in Vegas and had attended a concert the night before. I thanked God for their safety, and cried for the hurt of so many people. May God’s comforting presence surround them all during this tragedy!

    Thank you for saying this. When I began writing my post about Las Vegas I was considering this same content. I’m glad I, a blogging beginner, didn’t have to “compete” with your experience. Let’s pray that this experience, which has become way too frequent, doesn’t turn people away from God but instead makes them look to Him for strength and comfort at such a painful time.

    Thank you again for your beautiful thoughts. Maybe as loyal, faithful followers together we all can help others find and keep their faith.

    Be well, always.
